Hello people,
For almost for 5 years I was using my good ol' Pentium 4 computer for everything. I have an online life, coding, designing, administrating, surfing... It's been a fine 5 years, but my PC was getting slower and slower. Mozilla now uses too much memory and cpu, Gmail is a resource hog, Photoshop CS3 almost needs dedicated hardware to run! People release updates of software, I install them all, and they keep slowing my machine.
But not anymore!
Did you know what I was using until now? That was a decent machine 5 years ago.
Pentium 4 2.6 Ghz Processor (with Hyper-Threading! couldn't ask for more :P)
2 GB RAM (used to be 256 MB, then 1 GB, finally 2 GB)
80 GB IDE drive (yes, it's correct)
Asus p4c800 mobo
19" CRT monitor (this was heavier than me)
128 MB GeForce Fx 5200 video card (more than enough for me)
But I upgraded to a better one now.
Intel Q9300 2.5 Ghz 6MB cache 4 cores (scores 8 times better than a P4!)
4 GB DDR2 800 Mhz RAM (windows XP doesn't see more than 3.25GB! Damn 32-bit!)
2x250GB SATA2 in RAID-0 (that thing is fast!)
500 GB SATA2 storage (that thing is big!)
250 GB SATA2 internal backup (that thing is... nice)
Gigabyte x48 mobo
512 MB GeForce 8800GT video card (scores, well, a *lot* better than my fx5200)
19" LCD LG monitor with 5ms response time and 5000:1 contrast (this was a huge upgrade for me!)
Now, you will probably want some photos. I would be more than happy to provide, but my room is so cluttered with the pieces of my old pc, boxes of new parts, cables to transfer data from the old one to the new one etc, so I'd rather not expose the dirt for now :P
Oh, and I still accept donations! I provide free SMF themes, but without a decent computer I couldn't do that very efficiently. And people here don't give out free computers to guys like me. This box costs around $2000 here, and I'm paying it over a period of 12 months. Yes, I really need and accept donations!
I'll post pictures of the computer to the donors :P I think that's the least I can do for now. Thank you!
And back to the computer configuration. This box scores a whooping 1400 at Passmark Performance Test, with varying results. I'll make a few more tests to see the average, but 1400 is extremely nice to see (after 5 years!).
I'll update this post if and when I have anything else to say, and when I take a few "clean" photos of the machine!
